I’ve never visited the English countryside, but I imagine it’s something straight out of a fairytale. Rose gardens, homes covered in ivy, stone benches, moss-covered fountains.

If you’re like me and constantly dream of living in the English countryside, the good news is that you can replicate its quiet magic by creating your very own cottage garden! They’re so incredibly peaceful and I’m currently obsessed with them.

There’s something undeniably enchanting and timeless about a cottage garden. They’re also a great way to add a quiet space to your home that’s perfect for meditation, journaling, or just getting some fresh air.

Since cottage gardens are cozy and quaint, you can create them easily whether you have a large backyard or just a small front yard. Even a small patio or balcony can be decorated with cottage garden themes!

In this post, I’m sharing 25 ideas for creating a cottage garden! I’ve also linked some products from Amazon that will help you build your garden, but I highly recommend visiting a home & garden store or local nursery to find the best selection of items!

1. Overflowing Flower Beds

Cottage gardens feature beautiful flowerbeds that are full of perennials, annuals, and climbing vines. Layer plants of varying heights to add depth and make it look like a garden that has been growing for years!

I personally don’t think there’s one particular type of flower that does best in cottage gardens. However roses, wildflowers, and lavender look beautiful in these types of garden. I like to mix grasses & shrubs with brightly colored flowers that stand out to create a beautiful look.

2. Winding Garden Paths

Garden paths created with gravel, stepping stones, or even reclaimed brick look absolutely stunning in a cottage garden! I love the large pavement stones (like in the picture above) with grass peaking out around it. It adds almost a fairytale-like vibe of a path leading up to the house.

I recommend lining the edges with low-growing flowers or herbs (again like in the picture above) to make the garden feel even more inviting. Stones like the ones above are usually found in a home & garden store, but check out the ones below that you can easily purchase & place from Amazon.

When I think of English cottage gardens, I usually picture a wooden or wrought-iron archway covered in climbing roses and ivy. There’s something so soothing about ivy – it makes the home seem both charming and inviting. It also softens the landscape and makes the home like it’s surrounded by a romantic garden.

Try to find a rustic wooden arch or pergola that you can decorate with ivy, climbing vines, and roses to achieve this look. Check out the Amazon picks below, or check out your local Home Depot or Lowe’s store to find similar builds. Wedding arches are great choices for this, too!

Wrought-iron benches and antique bistro sets look absolutely stunning inside a cottage garden! I highly recommend adding one to your garden to create a place for you to eat Sunday morning breakfast, drink your coffee, or just enjoy some fresh air.

I like using antique metal-framed furniture, but you can also choose to use outdoor wooden furniture with a distressed look to re-create the charm of vintage furniture. If you have a large tree, see if you can tuck a bench underneath to turn it into a cozy, peaceful spot.

Wooden planters look beautiful inside a cottage garden. Repurpose wooden crates, half-barrels, or handcrafted boxes into planters to house herbs, plants, or flowers. You can also check out the cute designs from Amazon below!
